How to Prepare for a Possible Winter Storm in New Philadelphia

Brrrr! It has been cold in New Philadelphia lately! But us Ohioans are used to that, right? SERVPRO of New Philadelphia wants to give our residents some helpful tips to stay safe whether you are warm and cozy at home or out and about on the road.
Driving on icy roads. If you must drive despite dangerous weather conditions, take extra caution when passing bridges or overpasses. Always slow your roll before a bridge. Hitting the brakes on a bridge could be deadly. Also ensure your tires have a thick, good tread. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends, “Tire tread depth should be a minimum of 2/32 of an inch. To check this, hold a penny between your thumb and forefinger so that Lincoln’s head is showing. Place the top of Lincoln’s head into one of the grooves of the tire’s tread. If any part of Lincoln’s head is obscured by the tread, you have a safe amount of tread, according to NHTSA. If you can see above Lincoln’s head, then you need a new tire.”
Furry Friends. Make sure your companion animals are brought indoors when the temperatures drop. Also stock up on food, waste bags, litter, paper towels, and other items you use daily. Horses and other livestock should have a shelter where they can be protected as well. Ensure grazing animals have access to food and non-frozen water.
Staying Inside. Learn how to prevent pipes in the home from freezing here. Make sure to keep the temperature in your home on a warmer setting to prepare for a potential shutoff. Keep a stockpile of canned foods, boxed cereals, granola, and protein bars on hand in the case of an emergency. Create a winter home emergency kit. You can use the supply list by the American Red Cross as a guide. This is a great checklist to use as a basis for everything you need.
After the storm. If your home is still out of power after the storm, utilize a family member or friend’s home for shelter or a local refuge for lodging with electricity. Help the elderly people in your life if they need assistance.
In addition to dangers to you and your family. Storm damage can also affect your home and your home’s belongings. Ice and other storm related conditions can wreak havoc on your roof and cause major flooding as well. If you home has been affected by storm damage know that SERVPRO of New Philadelphia can help.
