Picture is of a strand of colorful Christmas lights next to a burning tealight candle. Did you know that house fires during the holiday season are more frequent, more costly, and more deadly than at any other time of the year?

The Holidays are bright and beautiful. Or we at least make sure of that, don’t we? Lights twinkling, fireplaces blazing, festive candles lit around the home, and warm cookies baking in the oven are just some of the holiday hazards. Did you know that house fires during the holiday season are more frequent, more costly, and more deadly than at any other time of the year? SERVPRO of New Philadelphia is here to make sure your Dover home is not just another statistic this Holiday season.

Kitchen fires are the number one cause of fire. The kitchen for sure does not get ignored during the holidays. With plenty of cooking comes other distractions as well. Therefore, unattended cooking during the Holidays is the most common cause of fire. Always watch your food. Never walk away from the stove while you are cooking.

Lighting candles is a staple around the Holidays. Candle fires increase to 4 times more likely to occur in the month of December alone. Make sure to get your “social distance” on with your candles too. Keep at least a 3-foot distance between the candle and anything flammable.

Christmas tree fires usually are not caused by the lights. It is usually an electrical issue with the outlet. Make sure to inspect your lights for frays and tears. Also, check that your outlet is working properly. Cracked electrical cords or broken sockets are major fire hazards during the holidays.

Fireplaces make your home extra cozy. Make sure to keep flammable items away from the flame. Wrapping paper, hung stockings, and rugs are some of the biggest culprits of fire starting from a hearth. Always use the fire screen and ensure all embers are extinguished before you go to bed for the night.

No matter how many precautions are taken, sometimes things just happen. SERVPRO knows this all too well. Disasters come at the most inconvenient of times.
